About Montessori

The Montessori classroom offers an enriched, welcoming environment for learning. Based upon the observations and theory of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952), an Italian physician and anthropologist, Montessori schools around the world have been helping children grow and learn for almost a hundred years.

The Montessori Approach

Here's a great video overview of why a Montessori education works: Superwoman Was Already Here (the Benefits of a Montessori Education)

There are many distinctive aspects of the Montessori educational approach:

  • The child’s ability to choose his or her own tasks, to work at his or her own pace and to move ahead as an individual fosters the desire to know more and builds a lifelong love of learning
  • Multi-aged work groups within the classroom (3-6 year olds, 6-9 year olds) allow older children to help younger ones while directly reinforcing their own learning
  • All activities are presented by the teacher, yet modeled to the individual child
